The Art of Writing Letters

The ability to write a letter that the recipient treasures is a gift.   However, it is not true that if one doesn’t have this gift one might as well not bother.  Instead of thinking about yourself and the impression you may be making, think of the recipient and his or her feelings.  Think about letters you have loved to receive- they are usually the ones that carry so much of the writer’s personality that he or she seems to be sitting beside you and chatting with you.  To achieve this happy feeling of talking through a letter, one must employ certain devices so as not to sound stilted.  Always use phrases typical of your own speech instead of artificially replacing them with more formal language.
